As of this week, the new Macs have been shipping with Apple’s own M1 processor – and all benchmarks that have been published so far are extremely encouraging. But not only the performance of the new devices is impressive, but also the battery life. Apple seems to have made a big hit here – all Intel models from comparable device classes are completely outclassed and even the entry-level models of the 2019 Mac Pro with 8 or 12 cores are surpassed by the new Mac mini in some benchmarks.

- Logoist 2 is a design tool. As the name suggests, it is primarily designed to help us creating logos. As a bonus, it can also create greeting cards, business cards and photo presets. I was skeptical at first.
A Mac mini with an M1 chip has now also arrived at the MTN editorial office – and as a test we came up with something special. The common values of benchmark tools such as Geekbench or Cinebench are already known, so we determine the performance with our own, practical benchmark.

The operator of MacTechNews.de, Synium Software, is developing a graphics program called Logoist (). With version 4, Logoist has been completely converted to Apple’s Metal graphic interface, making it considerably more powerful – version 4.1 is also natively available for M1 Macs. Logoist is very well suited for benchmarks because the CPU and GPU are loaded with different tasks at the same time and the entire rendering is also carried out on several processor cores. The CPU is busy with triangulating and calculating the geometry, the GPU with drawing the shapes and executing shader code. Our test is very simple: In a slightly adapted version of Logoist 4.1 we measure how long it takes a Mac to render all 150 sample documents ten times.
A similar picture emerges in the CoreML benchmark in Logoist. Devices with slower GPUs are at a disadvantage here, as CoreML on Intel Macs uses the GPU for calculation. The Neural Engine is used on the M1:

Conclusion
The speed of the M1 Macs is simply impressive, as these very practical measurements prove. A few years ago, one would not have dared to even dream of the performance potential of even the cheapest Mac mini with M1.
Due to the extremely high performance and the energy efficiency, anyone who is currently looking for a new Intel Mac should, if possible, postpone the purchase for a while. Should Apple be able to increase the performance of the new MacBook Pro 16 “or iMac to a similar extent, buying an Intel Mac would be a waste of money.
